Pres. Obama wants YOU to insulate your house!(And he decorates his mac with pacman stickers).
Yesterday I hurried home after work and purchased 20 bales of recycled newsprint blow in insulation. You have to purchase twenty to get the blower machine for free. Then I crammed myself into the farthest recesses of our attic through a series of hitherto unreached yoga poses while balancing precariously on the beams to avoid falling through the ceiling. Our attic is barely 3 feet tall at its center and the floor is littered with air ducts that easily slip off their vents if trodden upon. It was horrible. Once I got myself and the blower thing into place I basically buried myself in the insulation stuff, shimmied backwards and buried myself again. It was so dusty I really couldn't see anything. Even with a dust mask and goggles on I'm feeling like I've acquired a healthy dose of emphysema and a conductive hearing loss based on the amount of insulation now in my ears.
We ended up using about 18 bales of the insulation, some of which I suspect may have made it's way into the basement through the heater shaft which goes all the way through our house. You are supposed to put 15" of insulation down, but considering how many bales we had to buy I just went ahead and basically filled the attic up. I don't know how we will ever get up there again. Hopefully I didn't dislodge any of those vents. I also learned that our mouse colony is based primarily in the attic. I'm sure the insulation will end up looking like an ant hill of mouse tunnels. At least with our two cats they seem to be staying out of our living space.

insulation remains one of my favourite things to do to apartments. Altho, I don't ever drop bales into the walls - I do fill every damn crack with copious expando foam, reinstall door threshholds and fix storm windows.
It makes me very happy during the winter to sleep in a previously drafty apartment with total comfort.

Yay for insulation! You should get some rat poison and toss it liberally about up there. Might lead to stinky mouse corpses, but that's fun for the whole family!
